Dentistry has been delivering the oral health message for years. Brush twice a day, floss and use a mouthwash. The message is still the same but there is an addition. Rather than looking purely at a clean healthy mouth with fresh breath, we are now telling people that research shows a link between oral health and systemic disease. There is a link between gum disease and cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes, cancer, pre-term low weight babies and babies born with a pre-disposition to heart disease.
This information places an even greater emphasis on the delivery of in depth dental treatment, oral hygiene instruction and personal oral care. For those people who suffer systemic disease, have a compromised immune system, great care needs to be taken not to introduce further strain into the system.
Assessment of each case allows us to personalise our approach in an attempt to help our patient move towards the goal of wellness.
