Watch your dental routine this winter

The winter months are fast approaching, and with the promise of cold winter nights temptation for hot chocolates and warm apple pies are all too common

This winter, there’s no need to compromise when it comes to your wellness. Here’s how to keep on top of your dental health and keep your smile bright throughout the cold months.

Floss daily

You’ve heard it before, but there’s really no overstating the importance of flossing. Your toothbrush simply can’t reach every corner of your mouth. Flossing is a highly effective means of removing small food particles and plaque between the teeth. When flossing, be sure to reach under the gum line, and be gentle — don’t force the floss as this could cause damage to your gums. Make flossing part of your routine, even if you are on holiday.

Brush properly

It goes without saying that brushing regularly is a must, so make sure you do so every morning and night — for at least two minutes. If you find it tricky to keep track of the time, try using the stopwatch functionality on your smartphone to make sure you brush for long enough. Remember that it’s important to clean each area of your mouth thoroughly — the inner and outer surfaces of your teeth, the gum line and the back of your mouth all need attention. Don’t forget to replace your toothbrush regularly — look out for wear and tear and invest in a new one every few months.

Don’t forget your tongue

Food particles and bacteria tend to stick to the tongue, so it’s a good idea to give it a clean every time you brush your teeth. Simply use your toothbrush and a little bit of toothpaste and brush the surface of the tongue gently before rinsing with water. Complete your regime by using a mouthwash after cleaning your teeth and tongue — mouthwashes are formulated to effectively reduce bad breath and destroy any remaining bacteria. If you want to really give your tongue a thorough clean, try using a tongue scraper. These specially designed scrapers work by removing the debris from the surface of the tongue, helping to eliminate the bacteria that often causes bad breath.

Limit your sugar intake

There’s nothing wrong with a little indulgence now and then but try and enjoy sugary snacks in moderation. Sugar in foods and sweetened drinks can damage teeth and lead to decay, as bacteria in the mouth feeds on the sugar and produces destructive acids. These acids tend to damage enamel and can cause cavities. If you do treat yourself, don’t forget to brush afterwards to get rid of food particles that can build up. Stimulating the production of saliva in the mouth can also be helpful in combating the effects of sugar, so try chewing sugar-free gum after a snack and be sure to drink plenty of water. Better yet, reduce your sugar intake if you can, and avoid sugar-sweetened beverages as much as possible.

Opt for healthy foods

If you’re out at a restaurant with family and friends, why not incorporate some calcium-rich foods into your feast? Calcium helps to strengthen enamel —choose leafy greens, dairy products like milk and yoghurt, tofu, and canned fish.
